You Should Care About The Dangers Of Swollen Gums

At the base of the teeth is where plaque and tartar can accumulate. The gum inflammation causes a periodontal pocket to develop between teeth and gums, thus filling it with tartar and plaque. Swollen gums trap the plaque in the periodontal pocket. When the gum inflammation is left to continue, it will eventually cause destruction of the tissues and the bone that surround the tooth. And because the plaque contains bacteria, gum infection is likely to occur and tooth abscess may also develop, increasing the rate of bone destruction. Symptoms of gum disease may include: swollen gums, gums appear to be shiny, red, bright red or red-purple, gums bleed easily, gums are tender and painless, persistent bad breath and loose teeth. Being aware of these conditions can help reduce swollen gums and prevent gum disease.
